BiographyHarlan Christopher Barekman, age 84, of Monett, MO, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2009, at Cox-Monett Hospital. Harlan was born on July 19, 1925, in Colfax, IL, the son of the late Christopher C. and Blanche Agnes Worstell Barekman. Harlan served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 13, 1945. Harlan retired as the Superintendent of Utilities with the City of Monett. He was a lifetime member of the Hobbs Anderson Post #91 of American Legion in Monett, the Tom Wolfe V.F.W. Post #4207 of Monett, past president of Monett Senior Citizens Center, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monett, and a member of the Missouri Municipal League. Harlan married Ruth Ann Lyle on October 5, 1951 in Lincoln, IL. She preceded him in death on September 16, 1995. Survivors include one son, Rodney Barekman of Springfield, MO; one daughter, Debra Barekman of Monett; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a longtime friend, Mary McKee of Monett. Graveside services for Mr. Barekman will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the East Lawn Cemetery in Bloomington, IL. Pastor Ken Graham will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the Buchanan Funeral Home Chapel from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorial contributions have been requested to the American Legion Post #91. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO. Graveside Service
